Gan-Erdene Tsend

Born in 1979 in Murun, Northern Mongolia, Gan-Erdene Tsend spent his early childhood hundreds of kilometres to the South, on the grazing grounds of his nomadic grandparents, not far from the stony and sandy spurs of Gobi desert. His imaginative talents have been developed in felt yurts, sheepfolds and on horse riding trips under the ever changing light of the Mongolian steppes. They have also been nourished by the fairy tales and Buddhist legends told by his grandmother. He later studied Fine Arts at the National University of Arts and Design in Ulaanbaatar, and started with colourful landscape and magic animal paintings or portraits. Even these early paintings were not really naturalistic but gave the impression of being somehow unreal. Or, as Prof. Kuhna put it, whose master student Gan-Erdene Tsend became, after he had moved to Germany in 2001, these landscapes seemed to be on “the vertex between dream, yearning and reality”. And also the persons depicted, seemed to Prof. Kuhna “to come from another time”, not to mention his great esteem for his student’s “dreamlike feeling for colours, fine brushwork and extreme sensibility f or the ma terial”.

Gan-Erdene Tsend is living in Muenster/Germany since 18 years now. First he continued his studies a t the Academy of Fine Arts there and gained his diploma in 2010. Then he gained a wider scope for his inner growth as an artist in an environment of free creativity. The Northern German coastline with its changing ocean tides and the reflections of light on the watery sands gave him another fresh and strong inspiration which added softer and cooler colours to his palette, and consequently led him to what he is creating now. His first exhibitions in Germany and Mongolia as well as several art awards were the starting point for a successful career as a freelance artist. Meanwhile Gan-Erdene Tsend’s works are widely renowned among art collectors. About 70 solo and group exhibitions, mainly in Germany, are proofs of his ingenuity and uniqueness among the modern painters’ scene.
